Testimonials aren't easy to get.
When a customer takes time to share their experience — writing out their story, recording a video, or sitting through an interview — they're giving you something valuable.
The thank-you you send shapes whether they'll help you again. Get it right, and you've strengthened a relationship with an advocate. Get it wrong, and you've made them feel like a transaction.
Here's how to thank customers for testimonials the right way.
Why Testimonial Thank-Yous Are Different
Higher Effort = Higher Acknowledgment
Writing a review takes 2 minutes. Writing a testimonial takes 10. Recording a video might take 30. The thank-you should match the effort.
They Put Their Name on It
Unlike anonymous feedback, testimonials are public endorsements. They've attached their reputation to you.
Future Value Is High
Customers who give testimonials are your warmest advocates. They're likely to help again — referrals, case studies, beta testing.
Timing Your Thank-You
Immediate (Within Hours)
As soon as you receive the testimonial, send a quick acknowledgment. This can be brief — the full thank-you comes later.
"Got it! Thank you so much — this means a lot. I'll be in touch soon with next steps."
After Review/Editing (Within Days)
Once you've reviewed the testimonial and decided how to use it, send a fuller thank-you with details.
After Publishing
When the testimonial goes live, circle back with a link and final thanks.

- Discount/gift: "As a thank-you, here's [discount/gift/credit] on us"
- Early access: "We're launching [feature] soon — want early access?"
- Feature request: "Is there anything we could build that would help you?"
- Referral opportunity: "Know anyone else who might benefit? Happy to offer them [perk]"
Do's and Don'ts
Do:
- Reference specifics from their testimonial
- Express genuine appreciation
- Let them approve before publishing
- Share links when it's live
- Follow up if they don't respond to drafts
Don't:
- Send generic "thanks for your testimonial" messages
- Publish without their explicit approval
- Ask for more immediately (referrals, reviews) — wait
- Forget to actually publish it (yes, this happens)
- Make it about you instead of them
