A customer just left you a glowing 5-star review.
They took time out of their day to say something nice about you publicly. That's marketing you can't buy.
The question: what do you do now?
The answer: send a thank-you email that makes them feel appreciated and strengthens the relationship. Here's exactly how.
Why Email Thank-Yous Matter
Public + Private Creates Connection
Responding publicly on the review platform shows other prospects you care. But a private email creates genuine connection.
Opens the Door for More
Customers who feel appreciated are more likely to:
- Leave additional reviews on other platforms
- Provide testimonials
- Refer friends
- Stay loyal longer
It's Surprisingly Rare
Most companies don't follow up on reviews at all. A thoughtful email stands out.
The Anatomy of a Great Thank-You Email
Subject Line
Keep it personal and direct.
- "You made our day!"
- "Thank you for your kind words"
- "We saw your review — thank you!"
- "Your review means a lot"
Opening
Reference the review specifically. Show you actually read it.
Body
- Express genuine gratitude
- Reference something specific they said
- Add a personal touch
- Optionally offer value (without being salesy)
Close
- Reinforce they're valued
- Keep the door open
- Sign with a real name

Timing Your Thank-You
Same Day
Ideal. Shows you're paying attention and care.
Within 24-48 Hours
Still good. Most customers don't expect instant responses.
Within a Week
Acceptable if you batch review responses.
After a Week
Better late than never, but acknowledge the delay: "I know this is a bit late, but I just saw your review..."
What NOT to Include
Additional Asks
"Thanks for the review! Can you also leave one on G2?" — Don't do this. Let gratitude stand alone. Ask later, separately.
Sales Pitches
"Thanks! Here's our new product..." — Not the moment.
Defensive Language
Even if they mentioned a small critique, don't defend. Thank them for the overall review.
Generic Copy-Paste
If it's obviously a template with no personalization, it may feel worse than nothing.
Following Up After Reviews
30 Days Later — Check In
"Hi [Name], just wanted to check in — how's everything going with [product/service]? Anything we can help with?"
Feature Launch — Loop Them In
"We launched something I think you'll like based on your feedback..."
Referral Ask — Later
Wait at least 30 days, then: "You've been a great customer. If you know anyone who might benefit from [product/service], we'd love an introduction."
